Project Description

The site is located in the Borough of Hyndburn in Lancashire about a mile from Oswaldtwistle, and approximately 2 miles from Accrington. The map illustrates the location of the site.

In May 2007 Energiekontor consulted on a proposal to build a 24 turbine wind farm with a height to blade tip of up to 130m on Haslingden and Oswaldtwistle Moors. The proposed wind farm was provisionally named Haslingden Moor Wind Farm. As a result of the consultation process and findings of the environmental studies the proposed scheme has been reduced to 12 turbines with a height to blade tip of up to 122m on Oswaldtwistle Moor only which is now called the Hyndburn Wind Farm.

It is estimated that the 12 turbine Hyndburn Wind Farm would generate up to 72.2 million kWh of electricity per year which is the equivalent to the estimated electricity requirements of 52% of the households within Hyndburn*.

Oswaldtwistle Moor was preferred over the adjacent land on Haslingden Moor as Oswaldtwistle Moor is outside the water catchment area for Calf Hey, Ogden and Holden Wood reservoirs which are used for public water supply. Also the peat on Oswaldtwistle Moor is shallower than that on Haslingden Moor and much of it in the past has been artificially drained. As a result the blanket bog on Oswaldtwistle Moor is currently degraded and of relatively low ecological value. Location of the development on Oswaldtwistle Moor provides an opportunity for restoration work to significantly improve the condition of the blanket bog on Oswaldtwistle Moor.

* The wind farm could generate electricity to meet the needs of 52% of the households in Hyndburn if it performs in line with the national average for wind speed. The estimates relating to power output are based on the estimated output of 12 turbines with a rated capacity of 2.5MW each (30 MW wind farm) with a capacity factor of 27.5% (the 2007 UK average - Table 7.4 of Digest of UK Energy Statistics 2008 - Published 31st July 2008) and an average household electricity consumption of 4,212 kWh.
